30-Day Song Challenge: Day 16

Day 16: A Song That You Used to Love But Now Hate – When I Come Around by Green Day

Green Day is on the same plane as Nirvana, at least in my head.  Their popularity and reputations as groundbreaking musicians are both something that I cannot completely wrap my head around.  By saying that, I don’t mean to discredit either one of these bands and take away what the rest of the world has obviously felt they deserve, which is unbridled adoration.

Whatever.  I think it’s because they named an album Dookie and everyone, especially teenage boys in the 90s, got a big kick out of it.

So here they are, nearly 20 years later, with a Broadway show and a spectacular wall of awards while I, still totally and utterly confused, sit here wondering…What did I miss?  I had to have missed SOMETHING!

I don’t get it.  Never have – never will.  But I will, out of the kindness of my heart, admit that I once liked this song.

Let’s never speak of this again.

About Dena

I'm a suburban Clevelander by way of Oklahoma City, by way of North Florida, by way of Southern Maryland, by way of Upper Michigan, by way of Northern Italy, by way of Lower Michigan, by way of Texas. Because of living in so many places, I have something in common with almost everyone I meet. I love reading, writing, and American history (especially reading or writing about American history). I'm interested in culture of place, historical trauma, and writing about the kinds of histories most people don't know about.
